What is online marketing?

Online marketing differs from traditional offline marketing by being… well, online. Unlike old-fashioned marketing campaigns in the form of flyers, paper ads, bus ads and cinema commercials, your online marketing is on the internet. On search engines, websites, social media ect.

Another way to distinguish between classic offline marketing and the modern online marketing is to distinguish between push and pull marketing.

Why use online marketing?

If you have a website or a webshop you from which you sell a service or products, you will of course be interested in getting more visitors to your website. If you don’t use any type of digital marketing, people who are looking for what you offer, will likely never find your website and thereby not become one of y our customers. In order to drive more traffic to your website and increase sales, you will often need to engage in one or more types of online marketing.

To push or to pull

Push is pushing content to users who weren’t necessarily expecting it. Here we are talking most classic forms of marketing but also a number of the online ones are here.

Pull, on the other hand, is about delivering content and then optimising it so that users can find it themselves. There wasn’t much of that in the offline days, but now with search engine marketing and SEO, for example, you can create content that users want and then find right on your site

Organic or paid traffic?

Another way to distinguish between different types of marketing is to distinguish between organic and paid marketing. Organic marketing does not cost per click or post or to buy space for an advertising banner. Instead, it costs in time and resources to produce content, which then works for free afterward. Examples of this in online marketing are SEO and organic content on social media. The good part about organic traffic is that you can potentially get a lot of traffic with very little work (or cost) if done right.

Paid marketing, on the other hand, costs you both time and resources in terms of producing content, but this content then also costs per click or per sale. Some examples of paid advertising is affiliate marketing, Google Ads, Bing ads and Facebook Ads.

What are the different forms of online marketing?

Let’s take a look at some of more popular types of online marketing people use here in 2022. Some are pretty easy to get started on and doesn’t require much skills, others are more complicated.

SoMe marketing

SoMe marketing is a pretty new thing when it comes to online marketing. This can be things like posting content on Facebook, use Instagram Ads or working on getting more followers for your Twitter account. These days everybody is using SoMe marketing, so prices for adverting here can be a bit high. But it can be a great tool for creating content and reaching a bunch of potential customers without paying anything. This means that SoMe can ofte be a great way to get started if you have a new business with limited budget.

Search engine optimization (SEO)

Boost visitors via website optimization for search engines. Improved love by engines leads to higher rankings in searches. SEO is time-consuming, challenging in competitive niches.

Paid Advertising (Google Ads, Bing Ads)

With paid advertising such as Google Ads, you can create some ads and start getting traffic within a few hours. You can target specific keywords, customer audiences, specific websites and much more. Most online companies today use some kind of paid advertising.

E-mail marketing

By obtaining visitor email permissions through newsletters, your email marketing journey takes a significant step toward success. Email marketing’s advantage: targeting subscribers with special offers doesn’t require spending money. However, it often takes quite some time to build up a list of useful subscribers.

Affiliate marketing

Why spend time selling your products when you can have others do it for you? That’s the idea about affiliate marketing. You typically join an affiliate program like tradedoubler, and use their users to sell your products. Then for each sale you pay a certain percentage or fixed price. The good think here, is that you don’t have to pay for any type of marketing. Your resellers do it all for you.

This was a little bit on the various types of online marketing. Some of it (like affiliate marketing and SoMe marketing) are easy to get started on without much knowledge on marketing. Other types like SEO can be a bit more trickly.
